The animals dived into the depths to bring back a bit of earth. The otter, the beaver, and the muskrat took turns. Only the smallest came back up, exhausted, clutching a handful of mud between its paws.
Sky Woman took this mud and placed it on the turtle's shell. Little by little, the land grew. The rivers began to flow, the trees to grow, and the animals found shelter. Thus was born Turtle Island, our Earth.

The turtle, a symbol of stability, carries thirteen plates on its shell, reminiscent of the thirteen moons of a year.
